This modern and fully-equipped cottage is heavily insulated and designed for sabbatical and study use as well as family holidays. Out of season, it is an ideal base for botanists, geologists and ornithologists.

Cill a' Rubha is also suited to Family Historians - various resources are available in transcription, together with microfilm copies of the original. These resources include the Old Parish Register, all relevant maps in the National Collection, all census returns 1841, 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891, 1901 and a careful transcription of all Colonsay and Oronsay gravestones.

The cottage is at Uragaig and faces directly across the ancient chapel-site of Cill a' Rubha (pron: "kil-a-roo"), looking towards Sgibinis and Balnahard. There are panoramic views, encompassing the whole of Kiloran Bay, the Ross of Mull, the Torran Rocks and distant Dubh Hirteach lighthouse. The magnificent wrap-around sundeck provides a choice of shade or sunbathing throughout all the hours of daylight.

Uragaig is an ancient marine platform, now standing some 150 feet above sea level and backed by dramatic cliffs. It is a place of outstanding natural interest, particularly in terms of flora and ornithology. There are only a few houses on the peninsula and it is our hope that our guests will treasure the special nature of the area. The cottage is ideal for persons who seek tranquillity and natural beauty - it is remote, even by Colonsay's standards, and the tortuous single track road is not suited to constant coming and going.

No words can describe the views. A bald summary might be "a magnificent and panoramic outlook, which cannot be surpassed". In the complete absence of light pollution, the night sky is quite breathtaking.

Accommodation:

  • A hallway, cloakroom and large open-plan living room and kitchen are on the ground floor. The bright and roomy kitchen is fully equipped (including dishwasher). French doors lead out onto a generous raised deck, designed to catch all available sunshine whilst affording shade to those who prefer it. In addition to central heating, a "coal-effect" gas fire is provided.

  • There is also a comfortable and fully equipped study on the same floor. This includes telephone, digital television, music centre etc., and a futon can be used to provide additional sleeping space. There is a conventional PC with Microsoft Vista and basic Business software, also with full BT Broadband email and Internet functions and multi-function colour printer, copier, scanner and fax. The BT Home Hub is said to give "wired and wireless broadband all over your house".
  • For the convenience of guests engaged in genealogical research, resources include O.P.R. records, graveyard inscriptions and all census details 1841 through 1891. Access to these and to a collection of related material can best be arranged during the period of the "winter" ferry timetable.
  • A spiral stair leads upwards from the living area, and a conventional stair leads downwards.
  • A twin and double bedroom plus bathroom are all upstairs. The bedrooms have fitted wardrobes and generous dormer windows.
  • There is a shower bathroom in the basement, also a utility area (washing machine, freezer etc).
  • There is a small garden area, managed with a view to supporting native wildflowers.
