COLONSAY COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT COMPANY

I

The CCDC is currently involved in a number of exciting projects on the island. Further information on each can be found below. It is important to note that few of these projects would have been possible without our Local Development Officers (LDOs), who are in turn funded by Highlands and Islands Enterpirse and LEADER.

COMMUNITY GARDEN

A community wide survey by the LDOs found that many on the island were in favour of converting an argricultural piece of land in front of the Village Hall into a community space for all to share. The land was secured for a peppercorn rent from Colonsay Estate and funding was provided by the Woodland Trust and the Beechgrove Garden. The latter featured the garden on TV, as it's transformation was nearing completion. This really has been a community led project, with the Colonsay Community Garden Group working as an automonous sub-committee of the CCDC.

I

The garden was completed in Summer 2013, and achieved full bloom in 2015. Thanks to generous hard work, the space has been transformed into a beautiful and tranquil place to watch the world go by...

RENEWABLES

The CCDC have been working closely with Community Energy Scotland to establish an renewable enrgy project on the island. After some intial consultation it was decided in Summer 2013 that a wind turbine would be the most suitable road to go down. A feasibilty study into several potential sites is currently underway, with the results due to be published in late 2013.

I

The aim of the project is to create a sustainable income stream for the community, allowing the CCDC to continue their work without reliance on external funding. The money generated could be used in a number of different ways and would be a great benefit to the island as a whole.

BROADBAND

The CCDC is currently working with Community Broadband Scotland (CBS) to install a Next Generation Broadband network on the island. An application to become one of 6 CBS pilot areas was made and accepted in late 2012. The contract to establish and run the system is currently out to tender, with a closing date of 28th November 2013.

I

Any number of solutions may be brought about by this tender, though it is expected that a wireless system is the most likely to succeed.

LAND PURCHASE/HOUSING DEVELOPMENT

The LDO survey of 2011 found that housing was the most important issue to address for the CCDC. Colonsay Estate is willing to sell a sizeable piece of land to the community, which could be used to build affordable housing. Investing in Ideas have funded a feasibility study with the results expected early in 2014.

I

This could be a landmark project for the community. Afforadble housing and job oppurtunities are key to preventing population migration and to attracting new residents. It is widely believed that you cant have one without the other, so it is hoped that establishing affordable accommodation will encourage further employment on the island.

COMMUNITY PURCHASE OF COLONSAY HOTEL

The Isle of Colonsay hotel has been put on the market and a sub-committee of the CCDC are currently investigating a potential community purchase. Discussions are at a very early stage, but should the project come to fruition it is the intention of the CCDC to lease the business to suitable applicants rather than operate the hotel themselves.

An independent valuation report was produced in December 2014, which valued the property/business below the asking price. The vendors were unwilling to come down to this figure at the time and so the sub-committee is currently in 'hibernation mode' awaiting further developments.

COLONSAY TRADING COMPANY

The Colonsay Trading Company is the trading arm of the CCDC. It is responsible for the provision of petrol, DERV, coal and gas on the island. These services are provided on a not-for-profit basis, with any revenue generated being spent on the upkeep of the community petrol/DERV pump and of the Coal Righ, where the coal and gas are stored.

COMMUNITY WEBSITE

This very website is owned and operated by the CCDC. In 2011 it was decided that a thourogh overhaul of the community site was required. In 2012, with some financial help from HIE, the new site was launched. It has been a trememdous success, attracting praise from many end users. Some areas of the site still require attention but the work is ongoing. Further improvements are planned to help keep the site up to date and as user friendly as possible.
